You can do as little or as much extra side stuff as you want during a playthrough, but it would be recommended at the very least to do all Character Bond Episodes when they appear and give new gifts to the party members each Phase as they become available to save yourself some time at the end. The two characters have different story events for both the main story and side characters. The first step will be choosing which character you want to play through the game first.
